Jerome is the patron saint of Domus Verbi. A Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest biblical scholars in Christian history, St. Jerome dedicated his life to studying, translating, and teaching Sacred Scripture so that the Word of God could be known and understood.
Jerome was born around 347 in Stridon, a town on the border of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia. He received an excellent classical education in Rome, where he studied grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy. During his early years, he was drawn to both learning and the Christian faith, and he was eventually baptized in Rome. Afterward, he pursued a life of intense study and prayer that took him across the Roman world, including Antioch, Constantinople, and Bethlehem.
Jerome is best known for translating the Bible into Latin, producing what became known as the Vulgate, the standard biblical text used in the Western Church for many centuries. His work required mastery of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, and it helped make the Scriptures accessible to generations of Christians. Because of this monumental contribution, St. Jerome is honored as the patron saint of Scripture scholars, translators, librarians, and students.
Christian art often depicts St. Jerome with several distinctive symbols. One of the most famous is a lion. According to tradition, a lion once approached the monastery where Jerome lived with a thorn in its paw. While others fled in fear, Jerome calmly removed the thorn and cared for the animal. The lion then remained peacefully with the community, and it became a lasting symbol associated with the saint.
Another symbol frequently shown beside Jerome is a skull, representing memento mori, a reminder of human mortality. The skull reflects Jerome’s life of penance and contemplation, and his constant awareness that earthly life is brief and that every person must live in light of eternity. In many paintings, he is shown studying Scripture with the skull nearby as a reminder to seek wisdom and salvation above all things.
St. Jerome’s life combined rigorous scholarship with devotion to Christ and the Church. His commitment to the study of the Word of God and his famous insight, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ,” continue to inspire Christians who seek to know and live the truth of the Gospel.
